Ruth Ann Doub Callon, class of 1952, is considered an original figurehead of women's athletics in Indiana. After her passing in 2015, The Indianapolis Star called her the Mother of Indiana basketball, while the Daily Journal remembered Callon as a Women's sports pioneer. Callon graduated from Franklin College and eventually returned to her alma mater, as both a coach and professor. Callon was instrumental in the creation of the Indiana Women's Intercollegiate Sports Organization, a member of an IHSAA advisory board, and, according to the Daily Journal, established what is widely regarded as the state's first junior varsity team for women's basketball players. She was also a successful coach in her own right, winning three state championships at Franklin College with notable player Judi Warren, class of 1980.
