Branigin served as the 42nd governor of Indiana from 1965-69. Graduating from Franklin College in 1923, he earned a B.A. in French. He was an active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, a founding member of the Indiana Beta chapter of Theta Alpha Phi (theatre honors society), and president of the Interfraternity Council.
He continued his schooling at Harvard University Law School, graduating with a law degree in 1926. His career experience includes the Johnson County prosecutor's office, the Federal Land Bank, the Farm Credit Administration, and the Stuart & Branigin LLP in Lafayette, Indiana. Most notably, Branigin was the stand-in candidate for President Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) in the 1968 Democratic Primary in Indiana, and he served as Lieutenant Colonel during World War II working for the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) in Washington D.C.
Franklin College maintains the gubernatorial papers of Roger D. Branigin. Materials in this collection include administrative papers, correspondence, journals, legislation, invitations, press releases, records from the 1964 Indiana gubernatorial election, records from the 1968 Indiana Presidential Primary, and other associated materials.
